What this is

During the pandemic, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) lent money to U.S. businesses to keep paying their staff. The Small Business Administration publishes every loan over $150,000, with its status. This site lists the employers that reported 50 jobs or more on their application and whose loan the lender has since charged off — written off as a loss after the borrower stopped paying. Each record gives the jobs reported, the sector, the city and state, and the dates the loan was approved and charged off.

Who uses it

What it is not

Not the SBA, not a lender, and not a credit report. A charged-off loan does not prove a business has closed: many had, but some were sold, restructured or are still in dispute with their lender. The jobs figure is the borrower's own statement in 2020 or 2021: the SBA did not verify it, some charged-off loans were obtained with false information, and it is not today's headcount. The file is the SBA's of 30 September 2024: a business may have changed since.
